Shopping for someone who already owns Minecraft? A cape is the one thing every player on a server sees. Here are the best capes to give at every budget, how gifting a code works, and what to check before Christmas morning.
If you're shopping for a Minecraft player this Christmas, you've probably hit the same wall as everyone else: they already own the game. They have the plushies, the T-shirt, maybe the LEGO sets. What they don't have is the thing players actually show off.
That thing is a cape. Official capes hang off a player's back for everyone on the server to see, and you can't buy them in the Minecraft store. Mojang only ever handed them out at events and through limited promotions, so most players have none at all. An unused code is the only way to add one now.
Here's why a cape works as a gift:
- Every player sees it. On Hypixel, on a friend's server, in Bedrock with family. It's on screen the entire time they play.
- It's permanent. Once redeemed, the cape stays on their account for good, and it never runs out or wears out.
- It works on Java and Bedrock. PC, console, phone or tablet, the same cape shows up everywhere they sign in.
- It arrives instantly. No shipping, no "will it get here in time". The code arrives the moment you pay.
Below are the best capes to give at every budget, then exactly how gifting a code works, and one thing parents need to check before the big day.

Stocking Stuffers
The cheapest capes are still real, official Mojang capes. They cost less only because more codes were handed out. To the player wearing one, it's exactly as much of a cape as the rare ones.
Builder Cape

The easiest yes on the list. An iron pickaxe across crafting table planks: the most Minecraft image there is, and it reads instantly from across a server. It was revealed at Minecraft Live in May 2026, so it's one of the newest capes out there, and it's the cheapest way to give one. Its twin, the Crafter Cape, has the same art and is far rarer. See the Builder Cape history.
Copper Cape

For the builder in the family. Chiseled copper that weathers from fresh orange at the shoulders to oxidized teal at the hem, exactly like the copper blocks players build with. Anyone who's spent hours on a copper roof will get it immediately. See the Copper Cape history.
Home Cape

For anyone who loved A Minecraft Movie. The cape shows the film's glowing Earth portal under a bright blue sky. The surprise comes when they equip elytra: the wings show Steve as played by Jack Black. If the movie was a hit in your house, this is the one. See the Home Cape history.
A Step Up
Menace Cape

For the player who's always flying. The Home Cape's darker twin: the movie's obsidian Nether portal on a fiery red field. It shares the Jack Black elytra, so it's the best pick for anyone who spends their time gliding around on elytra. It's one of our best sellers, so stock moves fast. See the Menace Cape history.
Purple Heart Cape

For the player who wants to be noticed. A bold purple heart on bright white, the highest-contrast cape in the game. You can spot it from the other side of a busy lobby. It came from a 2024 Twitch drop and became one of the most talked-about capes of the year. See the Purple Heart Cape history.
The Big Present
These two were only ever given to people who attended Mojang's in-person Minecraft Experience events, which is why so few players have them. Their stock is small, so if you want one of these under the tree, don't leave it late.
Minecraft Experience Cape

The rare cape that still looks fun. Half villager, half zombie villager, on deep purple. It went to visitors of Minecraft Experience: Villager Rescue, Mojang's touring exhibition, and only 40,822 players have it, under a third as many as any cape above. See the Minecraft Experience Cape history.
Moonlight Trail Cape

For the collector who has everything. A diamond beacon firing into a starlit winter-blue sky, handed out only at Minecraft Experience: Moonlight Trail, an after-dark outdoor event in Buenos Aires. Just 7,188 players own it, and Mojang itself labels it Legendary. It's also our pick for the best Minecraft cape of 2026. We rarely have more than a few codes in stock.
Which Capes Do They Already Have?
Giving a cape they already own would be a letdown, so it's worth checking. Type their Minecraft username into our cape checker and it shows every cape that account has been seen wearing, with owner counts for each.
One honest caveat: Mojang only publishes the cape a player is wearing right now, so the checker builds its list from past sightings. It can miss a cape they own but have never worn. If it shows no capes at all, that usually means they don't have any yet, which makes a cape an even better surprise.
How Gifting a Cape Code Works
- Buy the cape with your own email address. You don't need their account details, their password or anything else.
- Get the code instantly. It appears on your order page the moment payment completes, and a copy lands in your inbox.
- Wrap it up. Write the code inside a Christmas card, print the email, or tuck it into a small box with a note. A card that says "check your back" goes down well.
- They redeem it. On the day, they sign in at minecraft.net/redeem with the Microsoft account they play on and enter the code. It takes about two minutes.
- They equip it. On Java, it's in the Minecraft Launcher under Skins. On Bedrock, it's in the Dressing Room under Capes.
Our step-by-step redemption guide has screenshots and fixes for every common problem.
Don't redeem the code yourselfImportant
A cape attaches permanently to whichever account redeems the code, and it can't be moved afterwards. If you test it on your own account, the cape is yours, not theirs. Keep the code private until you hand it over, and let the player redeem it signed in to the account they actually play on.
Buying for a Child? Check This First
Many younger players are on a Microsoft child account, and those come with safety limits that can get in the way of a code:
- Under 9: Microsoft child accounts for children under 9 can't redeem codes for promotional items, and capes count as one. It's a deliberate safety feature.
- 9 and older: redemption can still be blocked by family settings. If they see a safety message, the family organizer can allow it from the Microsoft Family Safety site.
The easy fix is to check the account settings before Christmas morning, then sit down and redeem the code together. It takes two minutes, and the cape is on their character before lunch.
Is It Safe and Official?
What you're actually buyingRead before you buy
A cape code is a genuine, one-time Mojang code, the same kind given out at events and promotions. Redeeming it at minecraft.net/redeem adds the official cape to the player's account, exactly as if they had earned it themselves. Nobody ever needs the player's Microsoft login, and nobody can "generate" codes. At MineCapes every code is unused, delivered instantly, and paid for through Stripe checkout. If a code ever fails, we replace it, or refund you if we can't. See how we handle every code.
Be wary of anyone offering capes like MINECON or Mojang staff capes. Those were never issued as codes, so the only way to "sell" one is to sell a whole account, which breaks Minecraft's terms and can be taken back. Our complete list of every Minecraft cape shows which capes can and can't be gifted.
The Last-Minute Gift That Still Arrives on Time
Because there's nothing to ship, a cape code is one of the few gifts you can buy on Christmas Eve and still have under the tree. That said, the rarest capes sell out first. If you're eyeing the Moonlight Trail or Minecraft Experience Cape, it's safer to buy early and keep the email safe until the day.
