The Minecraft Gamescom 2026 Cape: What It Turned Out to Be

On August 25, 2026, hours before the Gamescom floor opened in Cologne, the official Minecraft Instagram account posted a story. A player sprinting away from camera, wearing a cape nobody had seen — deep navy, creeper face picked out in cyan and white. Two lines over it:

GET YOUR CAPE IN-PERSON AT GAMESCOM!

STAY TUNED TO LEARN HOW TO UNLOCK IT ONLINE TOO!

No game was named. It went out on the Minecraft channel. Every reasonable person read it as a new Minecraft cape, including us.

Then the post came down.

One cape, three announcements, and only the last two made the game clear. The Minecraft Wiki now files Gamescom Cape as a redirect to the Corrupted Creeper Cape entry.

So the answer to "how do I get the Gamescom cape on my Java account" is: you don't. It is a Dungeons II cosmetic. Mojang named exactly two capes crossing from Dungeons II into Minecraft, and this is not one of them.

What the Cape Is

A charged creeper face — the light-blue variant that appears when lightning strikes a creeper — glowing pale cyan and white on deep navy. Mojang's copy calls the effect "Soulception".

It was handed out as physical cape cards at the Xbox booth in Hall 7 at Koelnmesse, August 26–30, with a redemption code on the back and a QR code pointing at Dungeons II pre-orders. The card art carried Kellen with a war hammer and Valorie with a sword, both wearing the cape.

Those printed codes run to roughly December 31, 2027 — over a year of runway, far more generous than the one-month expiry on the Crafter Cape cards from TwitchCon.

Why This Was So Easy to Get Wrong

Worth spelling out, because a lot of coverage still has it wrong and will for a while.

Mojang has run a two-route cape release three times in eighteen months, always for Minecraft: an in-person handout paired with a worldwide online claim. The Crafter Cape at TwitchCon Europe (~5,500 owners) and its online twin the Builder Cape (~145,000 owners) are the clearest example — same art, same weekend, twenty-six times the distribution, entirely because of one sentence about an online route.

The Gamescom teaser used that exact structure, on that exact channel, with a creeper face — the motif Mojang reserves for capes that mean Minecraft itself (MINECON 2011, the Founder's Cape, the Follower's Cape). Every signal pointed at a Minecraft cape.

It was a Dungeons II cape being marketed on the Minecraft channel. That is not a pattern Mojang had used before, which is why essentially everyone reading the teaser landed in the same wrong place.

Both follow a two-step unlock people get backwards: the cape appears in Dungeons II first, and only then does logging into Minecraft grant it. Checking Java first and seeing nothing is not a failure, it is checking too early.
