Minecraft Hero Cape: How to Get It Before the December 31, 2026 Deadline

The Hero Cape is free, it works on Java and Bedrock, and it rewards you for a game you already played. It also has the only hard deadline in the entire Minecraft Dungeons II cape line-up — and a two-step unlock that people will get backwards.

Of the five capes Mojang announced for Minecraft Dungeons II, the Hero Cape is the one most people reading this can actually get — for free, on an account they already own, for a game they already played.

It is also the only cape in the set with a hard expiry date: December 31, 2026.

What the Hero Cape Is

A crimson drape, scarlet-dyed, with golden motifs running through it. Mojang's copy describes it as cascading like molten rubies with gold that shimmers like sun-sparkling water — florid, but the colourway is clear enough: deep red with gold detailing.

Mechanically it is a loyalty reward. It exists to pull players of the original Minecraft Dungeons into the sequel, which is why the requirement is playtime rather than purchase.

Crucially, it is one of only two Dungeons II capes that Mojang brought across to Minecraft: Java and Bedrock Edition. The other is the Twisted Cape. The Soul, Corrupted Creeper and Special Capes never leave Dungeons.

How to Get It

1

Play Minecraft Dungeons I

On the Microsoft account you want the cape on. Mojang states no completion requirement — their systems simply need to confirm playtime, which means you have to be online while you play.

2

Log into Minecraft Dungeons II before December 31, 2026

Same Microsoft account. This is the deadline. Dungeons II launches September 29, 2026, giving you roughly three months of runway.

3

Confirm the cape is equippable in Dungeons II

Do not skip this. The cape has to show up in Dungeons II before Minecraft will grant it.

4

Log into Minecraft: Java or Bedrock Edition

Same account again. The cape unlocks there and can be equipped from the in-game cape selector or the Minecraft profile page.

The order mattersRead this

The grant flows Dungeons II → Minecraft, never the other way. People who log into Java first, see no cape, and conclude they were skipped are simply checking before the grant exists. Wait until you can equip it in Dungeons II.

The Deadline, Precisely

December 31, 2026 applies to logging into Minecraft Dungeons II — not to the Minecraft unlock step, and not to when you played Dungeons I.

So the sequence that works is:

  • Dungeons I playtime: any time, past or future
  • Dungeons II login: before December 31, 2026
  • Minecraft login: after the cape appears in Dungeons II

If you played Dungeons I back in 2020 and never touched it since, you are still eligible. The clock is only on the sequel.

Mojang's small print warns that confirmations "may be delayed or may run into technical issues." If you are cutting it close to December, that is a real risk — the safe move is logging in during launch week rather than the final week of the year.

The One Account Rule

Every step above has to happen on the same Microsoft account. Mojang says this twice in their own announcement, which is a decent signal for how often it goes wrong.

The failure case is specific and unfixable: you played Dungeons I on an old account, play Minecraft on a current one, and the cape lands somewhere you cannot use it. There is no transfer process for capes between accounts.

Before Dungeons II launches, check which account has your Dungeons I history. That is a five-minute job now and an impossible one in January.

Couch co-op is explicitly fine — you can play on a friend's console and still earn it, provided you sign in with your own Microsoft account rather than using their profile.

How Rare Will It Be?

Genuinely unknown, and be sceptical of anyone who tells you otherwise this early.

The pool is "people who played Minecraft Dungeons I and return for the sequel and log in before the deadline." Dungeons I sold well, but sequel return rates on a six-year gap are not something anyone outside Mojang can estimate.

For scale, recent Minecraft cape distributions land all over the place:

CapeRouteOwners
Crafter CapeTwitchCon attendance~5,500
MCC 15th Year CapeEvent server challenges~123,000
Builder CapeTwitch / TikTok drop~145,000

The Hero Cape's requirement is heavier than a Twitch drop and lighter than flying to a convention, so it plausibly sits in that middle band. We have it provisionally tagged uncommon in the cape encyclopedia and will correct that once real counts are observable.

Common Problems

"I played Dungeons I but nothing happened." The grant is not instant on Dungeons I playtime — it triggers when you log into Dungeons II. Nothing will happen until the sequel is out on September 29, 2026.

"It is in Dungeons II but not in Minecraft." Log out of Minecraft fully and back in. Cape grants propagate through your Microsoft profile, and an already-running session may not pick them up.

"Can I buy a Hero Cape code?" No such code exists. This cape has no standalone redemption code — it is a systems grant tied to playtime. Anything sold as one is not real. If you want to understand how legitimate cape codes work, see how to redeem a Minecraft cape code.

Bottom Line

Free, works on Java and Bedrock, and rewards a game you have already played. The only thing standing between most Dungeons I players and this cape is remembering to log into the sequel — and doing it on the right account.

Set a reminder for launch week. Do not leave it until December.

If you never played the first Dungeons, this one is closed to you — the codes in circulation today are the alternative, and the Builder Cape is the cheapest way to own a Minecraft cape at all.
