New Minecraft Aurora Cape: Everything You Need to Know

Minecraft has a new cape. Mojang revealed the Aurora Cape on September 28, 2026, the day before Minecraft Dungeons II launched. It's a pastel, star-flecked design unlike anything else in the cape collection, and it's coming to Java and Bedrock Edition.

Here's everything we know so far: what it looks like, where it came from, when it drops, how it unlocks, and how rare it's likely to be.

What Is the Aurora Cape?

The Aurora Cape is Mojang's launch-week cape for Minecraft Dungeons II. Mojang announced it with a simple line: "Don the dazzling Aurora Cape!"

Despite the Dungeons II link, it's a Minecraft cape. It goes onto your Java and Bedrock account and doesn't appear inside Dungeons II at all. That makes it different from the two other Dungeons II-linked capes, the Hero Cape and Twisted Cape, which require owning the games.

What Does It Look Like?

Most Minecraft capes put a bold emblem on dark cloth. The Aurora Cape has neither. It's a pastel sky that fades from the shoulders down:

1. Teal and sky blue across the shoulders
2. Periwinkle and lavender
3. Candy pink and peach through the middle
4. Butter yellow
5. Lime and mint at the hem

Single white pixels are scattered over it like stars. The bands are also deliberately staggered: stray pink pixels sit in the lavender, peach breaks into the yellow. That's why the gradient seems to ripple like a real aurora instead of sitting in flat stripes.

The brightest cape Mojang has ever made

We measured it against every cape texture in our library, 52 capes in total, on the back panel other players see. The Aurora Cape is the brightest of all of them.

Even its darkest pixel is brighter than the average pixel of every other cape except two, the Pan and Cherry Blossom Capes. The Cherry Blossom Cape uses 5 colors; the Aurora uses 18. On a server full of dark capes, it will stand out immediately.

Many capes just stretch their art across the elytra. The Aurora elytra has been redrawn, with pointed, jagged wing tips and a white-to-mint outline that keeps the pastel wings visible against the sky.

The Story Behind the Design

The Aurora Cape started as a leftover. Mojang artist Marc Watson said on Bluesky that it was "one of our spare Dungeons II concepts, a Sift-like cape." The Sift is the uncharted dimension at the heart of Dungeons II, which Mojang describes as a place of "threats, mysteries, and breathtaking beauty".

Watson "held onto it for a while, gave additional feedback", and two more Minecraft artists worked on the cape and wings. He believes he named it too: "it's been 'aurora' for a while." For a cape that looks this simple, it went through a lot of hands. In Watson's words, "at least 6 people were involved in its design over time."

It came out of the same concept work as the Hero and Twisted Capes, which are both dark (crimson with gold, and sculk navy with bone). The Aurora went in the opposite direction.

When Is the Aurora Cape Released?

The cape becomes available at 07:00 UTC on September 29, 2026, the same day Dungeons II launches. The window closes at 06:59 UTC on October 15.

Codes earned in that window have to be redeemed by October 31, 2026.

How Is It Unlocked?

The Aurora Cape is a watch-time reward, the same model Mojang used for the Builder Cape earlier this year:

• Twitch: watch 15 minutes of a Partner or Affiliate stream in the Minecraft Dungeons II category (not the regular Minecraft category), then claim it from your Drops inventory
• TikTok: watch 3 minutes of a Game Rewards-enabled Dungeons II stream, then check your notifications
• Redeem the code at minecraft.net/redeem, signed in with your Minecraft account

You don't need to own Dungeons II. Once redeemed, the cape is permanent: select it under Skins in the Java launcher or in the Bedrock Dressing Room. For the full redemption walkthrough, see how to redeem a Minecraft cape code.

Will the Aurora Cape Be Rare?

Probably not one of the rarest. A two-week drop that anyone can join will spread widely. The best comparison is the Builder Cape, the Minecraft Live stream drop from May 2026, which ended up on roughly 145,000 accounts.

Two things could keep the Aurora Cape below that:

• A longer watch requirement. It needs 15 minutes on Twitch, versus 5 for the Builder Cape.
• A narrower category. Only Minecraft Dungeons II streams count, not any Minecraft stream.

We have it provisionally tagged uncommon in the cape encyclopedia until real owner counts arrive. Once it's out, the cape checker will show who's wearing it.

How to Wear It

A cape this light suits light or neutral skins: white, cream, or a teal top that picks up the cape's shoulder band. Pastel skins match it directly; pick one of its colors rather than all of them. Very dark or heavily saturated skins make it look washed out.

If you like its sky theme, the Moonlight Trail Cape is its natural night-time partner: stars and a beacon beam on deep blue.
