How to Get a Cape in Minecraft (2026): Every Way That Still Works

How to Get a Cape in Minecraft (2026): Every Way That Still Works

Every way to get a Minecraft cape that still works in October 2026, on Java and Bedrock. Most guides still list routes that closed months ago.

Every Minecraft cape reaches an account in one of six ways. Some take five minutes. Others need a plane ticket or years of volunteer work. Some of them closed months ago, but older guides still list them.

This guide covers every route that still works in October 2026, for Java and Bedrock Edition, and what each one actually takes. Statuses and owner counts come from our cape encyclopedia.

Every way to get a Minecraft cape: the Pan, Aurora, Hero, Minecraft Experience and Moonlight Trail Capes are still obtainable, while the Builder, Copper, Home, Menace, Purple Heart, Follower's and Crafter Capes now only exist as codes

Every cape that is obtainable today (top), and the closed drops that now only exist as unredeemed codes (bottom).

The first five routes are run by Mojang and close on Mojang's schedule. Only the last one works for capes whose window has already shut.

1. Check the Cape You Already Have

Before anything else, open your wardrobe. Every account already has the Pan Cape: a stack of pancakes with butter and syrup on a pale blue background. It's been on every Bedrock account since 2020 and was extended to Java Edition on May 8, 2025.

With 2,247,067 confirmed owners, it's the most common cape you can still get. If you want a cape on your back today, it's already there.

2. Stream Drops (Twitch and TikTok)

Most new capes now arrive as watch-time rewards. Mojang picks a stream category and a window. You watch a qualifying stream for a few minutes, claim a code, and redeem it.

Open right now: the Aurora Cape. Watch 15 minutes of a Twitch stream in the Minecraft Dungeons II category, or 3 minutes of a Game Rewards-enabled Dungeons II stream on TikTok. The window closes on October 14, 2026 at 11:59 PM PT, and codes must be redeemed by October 31. Full details are in our Aurora Cape guide.

Every previous drop has closed, and you can't get any of them from a stream any more:

Those owner counts are now frozen, or close to it. The only new owners come from codes that were earned and never redeemed.

3. Rewards From Other Minecraft Games

Mojang sometimes rewards players of its spin-off games with a cape that unlocks on Java and Bedrock.

  • Hero Cape: play Minecraft Dungeons I, then log into Minecraft Dungeons II on the same Microsoft account before December 31, 2026. Once you can equip it in Dungeons II, log into Java or Bedrock to unlock it there too. The order matters; see our Hero Cape guide.
  • Twisted Cape: this was the Dungeons II pre-order bonus. Pre-orders closed when the game launched on September 29, 2026, so it can't be earned any more.

Mojang has said that refunding Minecraft Dungeons II revokes the capes it unlocked. If you're going for the Hero Cape, keep the game.

4. In-Person Minecraft Experience Events

Two capes go to people who attend official Minecraft Experience events in person:

  • Minecraft Experience Cape from Villager Rescue, the touring exhibition. 40,822 owners.
  • Moonlight Trail Cape from Moonlight Trail, the outdoor night walk that opened in Buenos Aires in May 2026. Only 7,188 owners, which makes it one of the rarest capes a player can still get.

You receive the code by email or on a printed card after your visit. It has to be redeemed within 30 days of the event closing in that city. If neither tour is coming near you, buying a code is the only other way to get these capes.

5. Community Roles

A few capes reward real work for Minecraft:

  • Translator Cape: chosen by Mojang from top Crowdin proofreaders. Only 102 owners.
  • Mojira Moderator Cape: for volunteer moderators on Mojang's bug tracker, by invitation. 54 owners.
  • Realms Mapmaker Cape: earn 8+ points through the Java Realms Content Creator Program. 405 owners.

These are some of the most respected capes in the game. They are also a multi-year commitment, not a weekend project.

6. Redeem an Unredeemed Cape Code

Most closed-drop capes were handed out as codes, and many of those codes were never redeemed. A code is still valid until it's used, so redeeming one gives you the official cape on your account, exactly as if you had earned it during the drop.

This is how MineCapes works. Every code we sell is a genuine Mojang code. It's delivered instantly by email and on your order page as soon as payment clears, and you redeem it yourself at minecraft.net/redeem. If a code ever fails, we replace it, or refund you if we can't.

Codes in our shop currently range from $0.98 to $699.99. The price follows how many unredeemed codes are left, not how popular the cape is. For the full explanation, see how much a Minecraft cape costs.

Which cape should you pick?

  • Want a cape on a budget? The Builder and Copper Capes sit near the bottom of the price list. Both are recent, recognisable designs.
  • Want something people notice? The Purple Heart and Menace Capes have bold, high-contrast designs that read well from across a server.
  • Want real rarity? The Crafter Cape has about 5,500 owners and the Moonlight Trail Cape about 7,200. That's fewer than a fifth of the Minecraft Experience Cape and a tiny fraction of any stream drop.

Capes you can never buyAvoid scams

MINECON capes, Mojang employee capes and Migrator capes were granted directly to accounts. They were never issued as codes, so nobody can sell you one. Any listing that offers them is really selling a whole account, which breaks Minecraft's terms and can be taken back. The same goes for "cape code generators": Mojang codes can't be generated, and those sites usually want your Microsoft password.

How to Redeem and Equip Your Cape

However you got your code, redeeming takes about two minutes:

  1. Go to minecraft.net/redeem and sign in with the Microsoft account you play on
  2. Enter the code and confirm
  3. Java: open the Minecraft Launcher, go to Skins, edit your skin and select the cape
  4. Bedrock: open the Dressing Room, go to Capes, and equip it

Capes are permanently bound to the account that redeems them, so double-check which account you're signed into. If the cape doesn't show up, our step-by-step redemption guide covers every common fix.

What About OptiFine and Mod Capes?

Search for "Minecraft cape" and you'll find OptiFine capes and capes from other client mods. Those are not Minecraft capes. Only players running the same mod can see them. Nobody on vanilla Java or on Bedrock will, and they're not attached to your account.

Official capes are the only ones every player sees, on every server, on both editions. That's why they're worth having.

Capes You Can No Longer Get

Older guides often still list these routes. They've all closed:

  • Common Cape: required a Bedrock login between May 6, 2025 and May 5, 2026.
  • Twisted Cape: Dungeons II pre-order, closed at launch on September 29, 2026.
  • Every earlier stream drop: Purple Heart, Follower's, Home, Menace, Copper and Builder. Now available as codes only.
  • Crafter Cape: handed out at TwitchCon Europe 2026 in Rotterdam. Now available as codes only.
